What is a doula?
As the doula, I am a non-medical professional that supports the needs of the mother during the stages of pregnancy and birth. This can look like: comfort measures, position changes, evidence-based information, relaxation techniques, advocation and support for the mother/couple.
My role as your doula is not to make decisions for you, but rather assist you in gaining access to evidence-based information to make the best decisions for you and your baby and be in control of your pregnancy and birth. Competent and caring doulas have also been shown to decrease the use of unwanted interventions and lessen the chance of caesarean. I by no means replace your partner but rather work with them as a team to ensure confidence in the birth process and enhanced support of you, the mother.
